BOOKER / MODEL MANAGER / AGENT
The booker is the connection between the model, the customer, and the model agency. The booker acts as a broker for the models, and is resposible for the booking. The customers send him a request for special types of models, and after that the booker checks his file for the right models. Booker is also in charge of organising the deal for both the model fee and the buyouts. As well as this, the booker sorts out the files, sends the bills to the accounting, and if a model calls in sick, the booker is responsible for rebooking a new model for the customer. |
BUYOUT
The client is purchasing unlimited usage rights to a model’s image, although a buyout may be only for a designated time period, geographic region or type of media. An example would be “two year print buyout in Spain, except for Internet”. If there are no qualifiers on the term, it means unlimited use for an unlimited times. |
CASTING
A casting is an introductory interview for the client to meet the model. It is the opportunity for the client to get a first impression of the model and see if he or she meets the job requirements. The casting usually includes a short interview or a demonstration of a catwalk or some polaroids. The models should bring their sedcard, wear well and offer the client a good first impression. |
EDITORIAL
An editorial shooting is one of the most popular shootings for a model to increase her visibility through the publication. It is basically a shooting for a magazine and not advertising for a product. The model is just there to support the main article only for one edition of the magazine. The editorial is essential for a model’s career. |
GO & SEE
Literally taken from the phrase “go see someone”. Generally a go and see involves going to see (or be seen by) a person who is casting for a particular job. In fashion work it may be more general: you go see people who have a history of hiring models, so that when they have a job come up they will know who you are. Go and see may be general (you are one of a type of model the client has asked for) or specific: the client has requested you specifically. |
LOCATION & SET
The location is where the production or the show takes place. It can be in a studio, outside or even a private building. The set is the location on which the shooting takes place. This can be indoors or outdoors and all the used equipment is movable. The set includes the entire technical setup of all equipment which is needed for each production. |
LOOKBOOK
The lookbook is a folder with photos of the model. These photos can be photos of different projects or photos made by the model agency especially for the lookbook. The lookbook should show the model in different situations and with different facial expressions. If the model changes her/his look she/he needs to keep her/him lookbook updated. |
OPTION
The option period is the period in which the model needs to be available for the customer. This period includes the travel time to the location and back, the fitting and the shooting. At least three days before the production the customer needs to decide which model he wants for his shooting otherwise the option to choose a model expires. If the model is not available for the whole option period, the model agency needs to mention this to the customer. If the shooting is abroad or in another city the customer pays for the travel costs, which is normally half of the model fee per day or within the model agency agreed fee. |
POLAROID/S / POLA/S / SNAPSHAT / SNAP/S / DIGITAL/S
Polaroids are digital photos that are supposed to show the model as natural as possible to give the client an authentic look of the model. Polaroids are done without any special styling in no special location. The model should wear no make-up and slim fit clothes (underwear). Sometimes a polaroid can replace a go & see. |
PPM
The pre-production-meeting is the preliminary decision of the customer regarding the selection of models for a project. The date of the project is normally set but sometimes it gets changed unexpectedly. If a project date is being changed, the options for the models involved are updated right after the model agency confirms the change. |
SELF-TAPE
Well, it’s filming your audition for casting directors at home or pay to have taped at a facility oustide of the casting office and audition schedule. If your camera will record good quality footage and audio, you can film your audition at home. Here are some tips to help you record an audition that will look professional and won’t distract from your performance: 1. Shoot in a quiet room that is free from background noises. 2. Film in front of a blank wall. 3. Be sure the main light source in the room is behind your camera. 4. Place the camera either on a tripod or a steady surface. 5. Always record a test, and then upload the test to your computer. 6. Get it done! Set a time limit to record your audition. Trust yourself, and be confident! |
SETCARD / SEDCARD / CARD / COMPOSITE / CPS
The setcard is a two sided printed card that infroms the client in a small overview about the best photos and informations of the model. This information includes the model’s size, the model’s name, the modelling agency’s name, and the contact details of the agency. Such a setcard is normally in A5 format and will be sent out by email by request to the client, in order to present the model. |
SHOOTING
A shooting is a recording of photos or videos taken by a photographer to be used for public presentation. The location decides which impression the customer gets from the shoot and is - just like models, photographers and lighting - significant for the concept of the photoshoot. The photographer, make-up artist and stylist are all working closely together and a production plan must be crated so that everyone knows the determined sequence of the shooting. |
